I was never really into Halloween costumes. I felt silly dressing up and hated the attention. Now that I have kids, I get excited about it! I personally love “homemade” costumes. I don’t mean every stitch has to be sewn at home. I just mean costumes that are put together by the person and not just bought all together at the store.
There’s nothing wrong with store bought costumes, of course. I just love the creativity and uniqueness that comes with putting a costume together. Plus, I love not wasting money, and when you put your own costume together, you’re more likely to reuse parts of it. Sooooo… I’ve compiled some of our simple, more “homemade” costumes for those who might be interested.
Lumberjack
My oldest son’s name is Sawyer. When he was one and didn’t have much of an opinion or say in his costume, I wanted something meaningful. His name means “a person who saws timber for a living.” And thus, he became a lumberjack.
I loved that this costume was simple and useful. A plaid shirt, jeans, suspenders, and a plaid hat. Everything we bought for his costume was used a lot after the fact! My husband and I even dressed up as lumberjacks that year.
Ghost
I LOVED this costume. I want to give credit where credit is due, and I found this on Pinterest. You can find all the details for it HERE. We got so many compliments! It was cheap, simple, and easy to layer for warmth!
Scarecrow
This is so NOT unique, but it turned out to be way easier than I expected. I found the scarecrow hat at the Halloween store and ran with it. A plaid shirt, jeans, boots, and pigtails. I had everything except the hat to make this classic costume.
Redneck
My husband had a lot of fun with this one. He found the wig and American flag sunglasses when I found my scarecrow hat. From there he cut the arms off an old button-up shirt and threw on some camo shorts and steel-toe boots. It wasn’t super clear to everyone WHAT he was, but it was pretty hilarious nonetheless.
Borrower
I was pretty excited about this costume! I wanted to be something unique… though I did expect more people to recognize it. Maybe it was just me who watched The Borrowers over and over and over again as a kid.
I bought some plaid material and cut a hole in the middle for my head. I sewed a plastic plate to my front with some twine and wrapped a really long rope around my waist. A sweater I bought used and cut up, a ribbon around my neck, and some buns on top of my head and whalla!
Mechanic
Baby’s first Halloween! He was two months old and I just really wanted to start celebrating holidays with a little around. We found this cute jumpsuit on sale and thought it would look cute with my husband’s mechanic jumpsuit. I wrote their names on paper with red yard around the outside for name patches. Their faces!
The random black sideburns were used at my husband’s insistence. Not really necessary, and a little silly looking, but definitely a fun memory.
M&M Person (Pregnancy Costume)
My little man was finally old enough to really trick-or-treat, and I didn’t want to be lame. I was about 5 months pregnant here and had just found out I was having another boy. I thought being a blue M&M was fitting. I bought a cheap unisex shirt and cut and sewed some white felt on my tummy. Then I just added black leggings, boots, and white gloves. Simple, cheap, and mostly things I would reuse. I mean, the blue M shirt is just in my pregnancy box, but everything else was clearly reusable.
