Years ago, before I even had kids, I started pinning kids’ bookshelves on Pinterest. I got excited about collecting children’s books and having reading nooks. I have always been a reader and couldn’t wait to pass that on to my children.
We bought our house when I was five months pregnant with our first, so I was looking for relatively cheap ways to decorate… while still trying to have a picture-perfect nursery. I had a total of five children’s books from my time working at Scholastic Book Fairs. That was it. So I didn’t need a lot of space.
I came across the genius idea to use IKEA spice racks for books. Simple. Cheap. Didn’t take up a lot of room. I staggered them on the wall in the nursery and loved them!
This worked for years. As I collected more books, I rotated them and had a few downstairs for when we were playing. The shelves were so cheap, that on a trip to IKEA for something else, I grabbed two more for when I wanted to hang them up.
When my second son moved into the room and we had two beds in there, I had to take the shelves down. There just wasn’t enough wall space! And since they were off the wall and I had some extra paint, I took to painting them black to match all of our black decor. It took a few coats, but they were quick and made such a difference!
I love that they are lined up down the hallway to the boys’ bedroom. They are all on the wall and out of the way but easily accessible. Honestly, my only complaint is that they are a little shallow. Some of the taller books are more prone to tipping over or being top heavy… especially with littles moving the books around all the time.
So if you’re looking for a cheap option, I 100% think the IKEA spice racks are worth it. Even if you want to paint them a different color. I mean, it’s hard to beat $4.99.
If you are looking for something a little different, here are some great options:
