When I had my first baby, I spent hour after hour holding him and rocking him and reading while he slept in my arms. I cherish such times so much more with my second because, well, toddlers are busy. I can’t sit and hold my new baby all day, even when he needs to be held to sleep more than 15 minutes straight.
So, the one thing that is saving me this time around is babywearing. I was skeptical with my first. I tried it, but I just felt pregnant again. I couldn’t move as much as I wanted. Couldn’t lean over. Not to mention the fact that I was way too stressed about teaching him to sleep in his crib. Besides, I had the time to sit and hold him in my arms when I needed to. By the time I was pregnant with my second, I knew I had to give babywearing another go.
I bought a cheap, off-brand wrap so I didn’t waste too much money in case I really didn’t like it again or my baby turned out to hate it. But we love it! I even got the new Tula Free-to-Grow carrier for Mother’s Day.
Have you heard of the Tula sleepy dust? Totally real. It’s awesome because I can put my baby in the carrier when he gets sleepy and still play with my toddler or do the dishes. I can wear my baby at the park or the store or church. He is exposed to fewer germs and I have two hands to help my toddler or to shop.
I get the added benefit of extra snuggle time. I seriously kiss the top of his head all day long just soaking up that sweet baby smell! I know he is safe. I can feel and hear him breathe. He also gets a little more time off of his head. My babies tend to get flat spots that stress me out, so I’m so much more relaxed babywearing.
There’s also the whole baby weight thing… you know, trying to lose the extra fluff when you barely have time to eat a banana or run to the bathroom. When I wear my baby I add 10 or 15 pounds I have to carry around. Plus, babies like movement. I am constantly swaying or pacing. Sometimes to get him to sleep. Sometimes out of habit. And movement burns calories!
I’m sure I could get by without my wrap or my carrier, but they definitely make my life with a baby and a toddler so much easier! What helps you stay sane with multiple kids?
