Ah, motherhood. The only thing I was ever sure about wanting to do in my life. The hardest thing I’ve ever done. I love my kids. I have lots of little moments I love. I also have lots of moments where I struggle. Kids have made so many things harder while teaching me so much.
I want to be real here without being negative. Motherhood is a mix of rough times and beautiful moments. As I’ve reflected on what motherhood is for me, I’ve created this list from my own experiences. Enjoy!
Motherhood is… mowing the lawn while trying to hold the flower your child just gave you.
Motherhood is… comforting and reassuring your toddler while casually scooping their poop out of the bathtub.
Motherhood is… having a kiss that can cure any owie.
Motherhood is… sharing the last piece or last bite when you really, really wanted it.
Motherhood is… watching your child in awe and wondering why nobody else is too.
Motherhood is… being unable to focus on anything 100% ever again.
Motherhood is… making every silly sound you can think of to keep the toddler awake in the car.
Motherhood is… happily accepting slobbery kisses with maybe some boogies mixed in.
Motherhood is… lowering your standards. Like, a lot.
Motherhood is… getting excited about seeing firetrucks and excavators, finding worms and potato bugs, and playing with sticks.
Motherhood is… blowing kisses as you drive away.
Motherhood is… bringing every snack, jacket, drink, blanket, stroller, umbrella, toy, and hat your child might need or want and forgetting to bring anything for yourself.
Motherhood is… overcoming your fear of spiders because you’re home alone with your kids and they’re watching you.
Motherhood is… making all of the doctor, dentist, and school appointments for your kids but avoiding making yours.
Motherhood is… adding 15-30 minutes onto any trip anywhere because buckling, unbuckling, and negotiating take time.
Motherhood is… realizing how little you really know… about everything.
Motherhood is… a spontaneous “I wuv you, mom” making your heart ache.
Motherhood is… changing your plans 20 or 30 times a day.
Motherhood is… being so sick of being touched but enjoying snuggles because you know they won’t last forever.
Motherhood is… putting away towels folded sloppy and clothes backwards on hangers because you’re trying to teach your kiddos to help.
Motherhood is… overthinking every single thing because everything you do impacts your kids.
Motherhood is… taking hundreds of pictures one day and two the next.
Motherhood is… trying to keep your cool all day, losing it at bedtime, and feeling guilty watching your children fall asleep over the video monitor.
Motherhood is… going out in public with no makeup, messy hair, and workout clothes.
Motherhood is… learning to do everything with one hand.
Motherhood is… figuring out how to pee while holding a child.
Motherhood is… holding sleeping children. And sleeping while holding children.
Motherhood is… learning about all of the things your children are interested in (like the names and functions of every construction vehicle).
Motherhood is… memorizing all of the songs on all of the toys… and getting them stuck in your head all day.
Motherhood is… knowing what every hour of the night looks like.
Motherhood is… not knowing how you’ll get through the day. Every. Day. (And somehow making it through)
Now, I could go on and on and on. I just may have to keep a list and do another post! What would you add?!
